A Septic Alarm, a Broken Control Box, and a Homeowner Hundreds of Miles Away

Another real-world example of why professional Home Watch services matter in Southwest Florida.

Imagine being at your home in Michigan, knowing you won’t return to your Florida property until Christmas. Who is checking on your house while you’re away? And what happens if something goes wrong?

That’s exactly the situation a new Trident Home Watch client faced recently.

The homeowners contacted us to check on their Southwest Florida property while they were away for the season. What started as a routine visit quickly became a reminder of why having someone physically inspect your home can make all the difference.

An Exterior Inspection Revealed a Problem

During our exterior inspection, we discovered that the home’s septic system alarm had been activated.

A septic alarm is designed to warn homeowners of potential problems with their septic system, including abnormal wastewater levels or equipment malfunctions. It’s not something you want to ignore, especially when a property may remain unoccupied for months.

But the alarm wasn’t the only problem.

Upon closer inspection, we found that the alarm’s exterior control box was damaged. Water had entered the enclosure and was damaging the electronics inside.

The equipment intended to alert the homeowner to a problem had become a problem itself.

Finding the Actual Cause

An activated septic alarm can indicate a serious issue, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the septic system itself has failed.

After investigating the situation, we determined that the alarm was being triggered by water damage to its electronic components rather than an actual septic system alarm condition.

That was welcome news, but it didn’t mean the situation could be ignored.

With the control box damaged and the electronics compromised, the alarm could no longer be relied upon to provide the protection it was designed to deliver.

Leaving it that way until Christmas wasn’t a good option.

We Didn’t Just Report the Problem. We Helped Resolve It.

At Trident Home Watch, our job doesn’t necessarily end when we discover something wrong.

We were able to identify the issue, source a replacement septic alarm, and arrange to have the new equipment installed.

Instead of the homeowners having to travel back to Florida or attempt to coordinate the entire process from Michigan, the problem was addressed locally.

That’s an important difference between simply having someone occasionally look at a property and having a professional Home Watch company you can depend on.

We identify concerns, communicate what we find, and help coordinate solutions when something needs attention.

What If Nobody Had Checked?

Consider what could have happened if the property had remained unattended until Christmas.

The damaged enclosure could have continued allowing water into the electrical components. More importantly, the compromised alarm might not have provided a reliable warning if the septic system developed an actual problem.

This is one of the challenges of owning a seasonal home in Florida.

Between heavy rain, humidity, storms, electrical equipment, plumbing, air conditioning, and other systems, problems don’t wait until the homeowner returns.

And while cameras and smart-home devices can be useful, they cannot replace every aspect of a physical property inspection.

Sometimes the most important discovery is something that can only be seen when someone is actually standing at your property.
